ABOUT HARMKE DATEMA CHANG

In my art I have three subjects usually overlapping each other:

My work is aesthetic research of biological elements and bodies in which I aim to find new visual outcomes of the origin of life (the ovulation, the big bang, and the orgasm of life on a micro and macroscopic level). Within this research, I am open and receptive to the shapes, figures and colours that translate themselves into new artistic dimensions. I want to use this visual study to create images that are recognizable but have never before been seen, an image that seems familiar yet strange.

In these outcomes I often find the images resonates my own struggle and liberation from the persistent underlaying believes against my career ambitions from even my own family. How to deal with that situation I’ll gladly explain during the exhibition.

The concept of a fictive microcosmos within my works builds upon the aspects of the origin of life within my work. It consists of the visual languages I have developed during this research, creating in and of itself a whole new visual dimension, a microcosmos. Creating with music or while making music resulting in abstract paintings where my own body and movements become an important tool. Creating with music gives me the satisfaction of putting both two loves in art in one piece. The music is a guide to the art but likewise, the art can serve as a guide to music it’s a collaboration in motion. I think that the body's movements that are so deeply connected to music are of great importance when someone wants to create. Music helps the body to open up and move freely. That’s also why I like to paint on the floor when I work, it gives me the flexibility and the room to dance around my work and create dynamic movements in my paintings. In that sense, music and painting have become part of a ritual of bodily movement. This is how I look at the art of painting and what I want to visualize within my works. Painting is a universal and spiritual ritual
within my own universe that carries the stories of the special connections I’ve made in this life. Like microcells that are magnetic for each other to exchange that special knowledge to create something bigger.
